Cost calculator questions

How much does a jetty cost per metre?
As a rough guide, a fixed timber jetty runs about $2,200-$3,800 per metre installed, before extras like a gangway, lighting or premium decking. Floating pontoons and combined structures cost more.
Why does the price vary so much?
Water depth, tidal range, seabed type and site access are the big drivers. Deep water needing long piles, a hard or rocky seabed, or poor barge access all push the price up.
Do I need council or waterway approval?
Most waterfront and canal jetties do. You'll usually need approval from your state's waterway or maritime authority and sometimes your local council. Those fees aren't included in the build price.
Fixed jetty or floating pontoon?
Fixed jetties feel solid and suit stable water levels; floating pontoons rise and fall with the tide, which is better for large tidal ranges and boarding boats. Many canal jobs end up combining both.
What decking lasts best?
Treated pine is the cheapest, hardwood looks great and wears well, and composite needs the least maintenance in salt spray. Composite costs more upfront but saves on upkeep over the years.
How long does it take to build?
A straightforward residential jetty usually takes one to three weeks on site once approvals are in place, depending on pile numbers, weather and tides.
