Marine handrails & safety upgrades on the Gold Coast.

316 marine-grade stainless balustrade with AS 1170 wind-load design, glass infill panels for unobstructed canal views, integrated low-voltage LED step-and-handrail lighting, marine ladder pockets, cleats and bollards. Critical safety upgrade for older 1980s–90s jetties without modern compliant handrail. ~$4K–$15K typical 12-metre run.

Marine handrail and safety scope.

Why upgrade now — the regulatory + insurance picture.

Older Gold Coast jetties (pre-2010) often have either NO handrail or a non-compliant timber-rail-and-wire arrangement that doesn’t meet current AS 1170 wind-load or AS 1657 access-and-egress standards. Insurance underwriters increasingly require compliant fall protection on canal-frontage structures — a fall from jetty into canal can cause head-trauma, drowning, or both. At property sale, a non-compliant handrail is a documented issue on the building report. The fix is straightforward: a 316 stainless balustrade with infill (mesh, vertical balustrade, or glass) properly anchored to the deck structure.

316 marine-grade stainless — the spec.

  • Top rail: 50mm or 40mm diameter 316 stainless tube, 1100mm height from deck (residential), 1200mm if above 1m fall drop. Continuous welded joints, polished marine finish.
  • Vertical posts: 50mm 316 tube at 1,200–1,500mm centres, deck-fixed via 316 base-plate + 316 expansion or chemical anchors.
  • Infill options: Vertical balustrade rods (most common, $$), 316 wire-rope mesh ($$$, marina look), 12mm toughened glass panels ($$$$, premium / view-preserving), horizontal balustrade rod (cheapest but non-compliant in residential due to climbable-zone).
  • Hardware: All 316 fixings, never 304 or galvanised. Marine-grade epoxy bedding between base-plate and deck to prevent crevice corrosion.
  • Why NOT aluminium: Aluminium handrails on marine structures pit and corrode within 5–10 years in canal salt-spray, even premium powder-coated grades. 316 stainless lasts 25–50 years.

AS 1170 wind-load design.

The Gold Coast sits in AS 1170 Wind Region B2 (post-2017 update) — cyclonic exposure with design wind speeds up to 60m/s for residential structures. Marine handrail design must withstand both the static lean-load case (people leaning on the rail) and the dynamic wind-load case (cyclone-rated wind hitting glass infill panels). Glass infill in particular needs careful structural design — standard 12mm toughened glass works for sub-1m panel widths; larger panels need laminated or thicker glass. Our designs are engineer-certified to AS 1170 and we lodge the certification with the property file at handover.

Integrated LED lighting.

Modern Gold Coast jetty rebuilds and upgrades almost always include integrated low-voltage LED lighting:

  • Step-light strip (along the deck edge, downward-facing): Illuminates the deck surface for safe night walking without canal glare. ~$80–$150 per metre. Warm white 3000K standard, SCCMA / Hope Harbour mandate this colour temperature.
  • Handrail-integrated LED: Concealed within the top rail, downward or outward-facing. Premium look. ~$180–$320 per metre.
  • Post-cap accent lights: Decorative low-output uplight on each balustrade post. ~$60–$120 per post.
  • Pontoon edge underwater LED: Submerged LED illuminating the water immediately beneath the pontoon. Stunning at night. ~$1,500–$3,500 per pontoon for 4–6 units.
  • Power: 24V DC low-voltage system, transformer mounted in nearest pool-pump-shed-style enclosure on land. Marine-grade IP67/68 fittings throughout.

Ladders, cleats, bollards.

  • Marine ladder pocket (into water): 316 stainless retractable swim ladder set into a deck pocket. Critical safety feature — if someone falls into the canal, the ladder gives a self-rescue route. $400–$1,200 per ladder.
  • Mooring cleats: 316 stainless tie-up cleats at 2–3m intervals along the jetty face. $80–$180 per cleat.
  • Bollards: Larger 316 stainless mooring bollards for heavier vessels. $250–$450 each.
  • Ring-fenders / dock-bumpers: Soft rubber edge protection where vessels berth alongside. $80–$200 per metre.
