Pontoon costs on the Gold Coast canals in 2026.

The two pontoon types

Concrete vs aluminium — which is right for your canal?

Concrete floating pontoon (recommended for Gold Coast canals).

The standard for Gold Coast canal-estate residential pontoons. The hull is an EPS foam-core structure with a fibreglass-reinforced concrete shell — buoyant, heavy enough to be stable underfoot, and effectively maintenance-free below the waterline. BIA-approved concrete pontoons are rated for 30–50 years of tidal-zone service. Surface decking is hardwood (Spotted Gum or Merbau) or composite, finished the same way as the connecting jetty.

All turnkey prices include supply and install of the pontoon, gangway, guide piles, mooring hardware, and MSQ tidal-works lodgement. They do not include marina berthing fees or City of Gold Coast building permits where applicable.

Aluminium floating pontoon.

Lighter, marginally cheaper upfront, and useful where the pontoon needs to be relocatable or where barge crane access is restricted. Aluminium pontoons are more common in commercial marina settings. For permanent residential canal installations, the main drawback is galvanic corrosion when aluminium hull sections contact galvanised steel guide piles, fastenings, or the boat’s bronze fittings — requiring sacrificial anodes and vigilant antifouling. Service life with good maintenance is 20–30 years.

What drives the price

The seven factors that move pontoon cost up or down.

1. Canal frontage width.

Wider frontage allows a larger pontoon, but the key cost driver is whether the pontoon fits within your boundary setback as lodged with Council. Setback approvals add $800–$2,400 to the approval process if a formal consent is required.

2. Tidal range and freeboard.

Gold Coast canals have a mean spring tidal range of around 1.6m. Guide piles need to be long enough to accommodate tidal movement plus safety margin — typical installed length is 5–7m. Deeper guide piles (harder subsoil, longer pile) add $1,200–$3,000 per pile.

3. Guide piles vs pile-less mooring.

Most Gold Coast canal pontoons use two to three vertical guide piles to constrain the pontoon’s lateral position as tide rises and falls. Pile-less systems (chain-and-sinker or anchor mooring) are cheaper but leave the pontoon free to swing — impractical on narrow canals and usually rejected by Council. Factor two guide piles as a minimum; premium estates typically specify three.

4. Gangway length and angle.

A short 4m gangway on a canal with 1.6m tidal range reaches a steep angle at low tide — it can be traversed but is awkward. A 6–8m gangway provides a gentler slope and is strongly preferred for elderly users or those with reduced mobility. Each additional metre of gangway adds approximately $400–$700 to the cost.

5. Decking finish.

Standard hardwood deck (Spotted Gum, Merbau) is included in all our base prices. Premium composite decking (Trex, Duralife) adds $80–$120/m² over hardwood but is slip-resistant when wet and requires no oiling. For a 30m² pontoon deck, composite upcharge is $2,400–$3,600.

6. MSQ tidal-works approval.

All pontoon installations in the Gold Coast tidal zone require MSQ approval — see the MSQ approval process page. Lodgement fee is $620. Assessment is 4–8 weeks. We prepare engineered drawings and handle lodgement. Larger pontoons or those in more sensitive marine zones may trigger community consultation and a longer approval cycle.

7. Barge and crane access.

Pile driving and pontoon delivery require a crane-barge. On wide main canals (Paradise Point, Sovereign Islands waterways), barge access is straightforward and costs $1,200–$2,400 for a standard installation. On narrower secondary canals or tidal flats where barge draft is limited (some Hope Island and Runaway Bay canals), a smaller barge or amphibious excavator is needed, adding $1,800–$4,500 to the mobilisation cost.

What a pontoon costs to run year-on-year.

One of the attractions of a BIA-approved concrete pontoon is the low ongoing cost compared to a timber-pile jetty. After installation, annual running costs for a well-maintained Gold Coast canal pontoon are:

  • Annual inspection (hull, guide piles, gangway hardware): $400–$600
  • Guide-pile antifoul repaint (every 2–3 years): $600–$1,200 per application
  • Gangway hardwood deck oil (annual): $200–$400
  • Mooring cleat and fairlead check + re-bed if needed: $200–$600 every 5 years
  • Sacrificial anode replacement on aluminium pontoons (annual): $300–$600

Can I add a pontoon to an existing jetty, or does the jetty need to be upgraded first?

In most cases, yes — a floating pontoon connects to the existing fixed jetty via an aluminium gangway. The fixed jetty needs to be structurally sound enough to carry the gangway load and provide a stable landing point. If your jetty is ageing, we assess it first and may recommend a targeted repair or partial rebuild of the gangway-attachment section before pontoon installation. Adding a pontoon without addressing a failing jetty is poor economics.
