BIA-approved · foam-core or concrete

Floating pontoon installation on the Gold Coast.

Floating pontoons that move with the 1.0–1.5m Gold Coast canal tide — constant freeboard for safe boat boarding regardless of high or low water. BIA-approved polystyrene-foam-core (most common) or concrete (premium / heavy vessel). Single-bay through to twin-finger configurations. Includes gangway from fixed jetty, access ramp, mooring cleats, and pile-anchor system.

Pontoon types and configurations.

Floating pontoon options.

  • Polystyrene-foam-core (most common): Marine-grade polystyrene foam encapsulated in fibreglass shell, with a hardwood-or-composite deck overlay. Buoyant, low-cost, low-maintenance. Lifespan: 20–30 years. BIA-approved. $8,000–$18,000 ex-install for a 3×6m single-bay pontoon.
  • Concrete pontoon (premium / heavy vessel): Reinforced concrete shell with internal foam buoyancy. Heavier, more stable in wake / chop conditions, suitable for heavier vessels (10m+ powered boats). Lifespan: 40–60+ years. $15,000–$30,000 ex-install for a comparable single-bay.
  • Aluminium-frame pontoon: Lightweight aluminium frame with foam-core or air-tank buoyancy. Premium architectural look, easier to relocate. Lifespan: 25–40 years. $12,000–$25,000 ex-install.
  • Twin-finger pontoon: Two parallel pontoon decks with a connecting gangway between them, allowing simultaneous mooring of two vessels or a vessel + jet ski. $20,000–$45,000 ex-install.

Pile-anchor systems.

  • Driven hardwood piles with sliding pile-guides: Most common. 2–4 piles driven adjacent to the pontoon, with steel pile-guides (galvanised or 316 stainless) attached to the pontoon that slide vertically on the pile as the tide rises and falls. Service life: 25–40 years (treated piles), pile-guides 15–25 years. Reliable, cost-effective.
  • Concrete-cased pile anchors: Premium option. Concrete-jacketed steel piles eliminate marine-borer attack entirely. Service life: 50–100+ years. Cost: ~30–50% more than hardwood piles.
  • Floating anchor (chain + dead-weight): Used where pile-driving isn’t feasible (e.g. extreme water depth or rock substrate). Less stable, requires periodic re-tensioning of chains. Suitable for light-duty / temporary applications only.

BIA approval — what it means.

The Boating Industry Association (BIA) operates an Approved Pontoon scheme that certifies pontoon manufacturers meeting structural, buoyancy and safety standards. BIA approval is the de-facto industry standard for new pontoon installations on the Gold Coast canal network — SCCMA (Sanctuary Cove), Hope Harbour and most insurance underwriters require BIA-approved pontoons. We supply and install BIA-approved pontoons from Australian Pontoons, FPS Pontoons, Superior Jetties, Bellingham Marine, and other approved manufacturers. The BIA approval certificate accompanies handover and supports insurance / sale documentation.

Gangway design and tide range.

Gold Coast canal tide range is typically 1.0–1.5m between mean low water and mean high water spring tide. The gangway (the access ramp from the fixed jetty deck down to the floating pontoon) needs to articulate through this range while maintaining a safe walking gradient. We design gangways with 4.5–6.0m run to keep the maximum gradient under 15° at low tide; shorter gangways are possible but get unpleasantly steep. Gangway rolls on pontoon side via marine-grade urethane wheels, hinges on jetty side via 316 stainless pin assembly. AS 1657 compliance for handrail height and gradient is built into the design.

Timeline for typical install.

  1. Week 1: Order pontoon from manufacturer (8–14 week lead time for premium concrete pontoons; 4–6 weeks for foam-core).
  2. Day 1 of install: Drive anchor piles (truck-mounted rig or barge-based depending on access).
  3. Day 2: Pontoon delivered by truck or barge, lifted into water by crane.
  4. Day 3: Pile-guides attached, gangway installed and adjusted, mooring cleats fitted.
  5. Day 3 (pm): Final inspection, handover, BIA approval certificate transferred to owner.
